Prominent Safety Regulations Regarding Overhead Crane Safety!

Before discussing about overhead crane safety, it is imperative that first we try to understand what an overhead crane. With a movable bridge, an overhead crane is a crane that also has a hoisting system gliding atop an overhead runway that is fixed. It is not a chld’s play when operating an overhead crane. Capable of moving enormous weight and heavy objects from one place to another, these cranes are tough and robust machines.

If the operator doesn't know the proper safety options on bridge cranes, even a second's loss of attention or carelessness can lead to ghastly accidents thus collission avoidance must be a priority. Moreover, in ensuring the safety of overhead cranes there are imperative procedures of maintenance playing a crucial role. Thus it is essential that one pays a lot of attention while operating these behemoths or monstrous machines and follow all safety procedures correctly followed.

Safety Options to be taken care of

The accurate safety options can help you avoid life-threatening disabilities and expensive injuries, while operating an overhead crane. Go through the operating manual with a fine tooth comb as before you begin to use the bridge crane, each crane has its individual specifications. Even then, during use of any overhead crane, there are certain general procedures applicable.

• While working or operating near overhead cranes, one must wear head protective gear and personal protective gear.

• Always ensure, before moving the load that all around, you have a clear line of visibility and to clear any obstructions below, lift the load high enough.

• So they clear out the area over which the load is to be moved, warn colleagues beforehand and to ride the load or the hook, never allow anybody.

• Without sudden jerks, move the load as smoothly as possible in any direction. Position the hoist directly above the load before lifting it, to lift load vertically and gently, and lower it directly below the hoist. To ensure a smooth movement, always keep two complete wraps of ropes on the hoist.

• Except for emergency stop signals, respond to signals only from the personnel operating the lift; which can come from any direction.

• In your overhead cranes, never exceed the lifting capacity. Before lifting it further, always test for balance or use load limiter by lifting the load a few inches off the ground.

Upkeep of your Crane

Another very important area about which most of us become smug over time is maintenance. Costing you in terms of time, money and health, this can be a fatal mistake. Every time you think of using your overhead crane, thorough inspections are a must. To check for any loose ends or hanging components, take a quick look at the outside of the machine.

From the hoist, bridge or trolley, start the crane and check for any abnormal sounds or movements. Ensure that in consistence with the control buttons, the hoist is moving smoothly in all directions. Moreover, while inspecting the crane always wear standard harness and protective clothing.
